Stainless Steel 904L is an austenitic, low-carbon stainless steel alloy that contains about 19–23% nickel, 23–28% chromium, 4–5% molybdenum, and 1–2% copper, with minute amounts of manganese and silicon. This special combination provides outstanding pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking resistance. Mechanical properties are tensile strength of up to 490 MPa, yield strength at about 220 MPa, and elongation of 35–40%. The alloy sustains its mechanical strength in high-temperature and chloride-containing environments, and so 904L pipe fittings are suitable for harsh industrial conditions that need strength and corrosion resistance over the long term.
