17-4 PH stainless steel is a precipitation-hardening martensitic alloy with about 15-17.5% chromium, 3-5% nickel, 3-5% copper, and traces of niobium. Upon heat treatment, it exhibits superior tensile strength of up to 1200 MPa, yield strength of around 1100 MPa, and hardness between HRC 40–45. It also has good ductility with around 8–10% elongation and high fatigue resistance. It has corrosion resistance equal to Type 304 stainless steel in most environments but has enough mechanical strength to provide weight savings of considerable amounts in structural applications.
