ER309/309L filler wire has approximately 22–24% Chromium and 12–14% Nickel with low Carbon content (<0.03% for 309L). The composition enhances intergranular corrosion and hot cracking resistance. The tensile strength of welded joints is in the range of 600 MPa and the yield strength is 400 MPa with good toughness and oxidation resistance up to 950°C. ER309/309L can be used in both MIG and TIG welding processes, producing a stable arc and less spatter. These fillers are AWS A5.9 ER309 and ER309L classification compliant and are ideal for welding corrosion-susceptible and dissimilar joints.

AWS ER309/309L filler wires are typically utilized in welding stainless steel to carbon or low-alloy steel, particularly in boilers, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and chemical processors equipment.
