ER312 filler metal has a high content of Chromium and a moderate content of Nickel and is used for joining difficult-to-weld materials or incongruous compositions. It is renowned for superior mechanical strength, resistance to corrosion, and metallurgical stability over a wide spectrum of base materials. ER312 wires have about 29–32% Chromium and 8–10.5% Nickel, giving a two-phase weld metal (austenitic-ferritic) having high tensile strength of about 800 MPa and good crack resistance. The high concentration of alloy makes it very convenient to weld tool steels, spring steels, and cast steels. The filler wires work satisfactorily with both TIG and MIG processes and give clean, tough welds even on dirty or dissimilar base metals. The weld deposits are very resistant to stress cracking and oxidation. ER312 is reliable and versatile for use in applications with severe service conditions or doubtful metallurgy.
