Stainless Steel 455 has 11–12.5% chromium, 7.5–9.5% nickel, and titanium and molybdenum additions. It has outstanding tensile (up to 1380 MPa) and yield (approximately 1170 MPa) strength following age hardening, with hardness up to HRC 45. It has moderate corrosion resistance, better than carbon steel, and very good toughness. The alloy is martensitic and precipitation-hardenable, with good fatigue and impact resistance. It can be welded and machined in the annealed state, then heat treated to attain high strength under severe service conditions.
