Stainless Steel 405 Sheet and Plates are ferritic stainless steels that are intended to provide good oxidation resistance and formability at high temperatures. Andre Stainless in Pulau Ujong, Singapore, provides SS 405 in different thickness and sizes for usage in the automotive, heat exchanger, and industrial systems. Since SS 405 contains less chromium carbide formed as a result of the addition of aluminum, it is immune to intergranular corrosion. It is particularly of high demand for welded assemblies and parts that need moderate corrosion resistance along with improved thermal cycling ability. Affordability and simple fabricability make SS 405 widely used in bulk applications where appearance is of lesser importance compared to thermal performance.
SS 405 involves 11.5–14.5% chromium, 0.08% maximum carbon, and minute quantities of aluminum and silicon. It has a ferritic structure, providing magnetic properties and excellent weldability. Mechanical properties consist of tensile strength of 415–540 MPa and 250–275 MPa yield strength, with elongation of approximately 20%. It offers excellent oxidation resistance up to 870°C, reduced scaling, and improved creep strength compared to SS 409. The aluminum addition prevents hardening during welding. SS 405 performs well in high-temperature service environments and maintains structural stability after prolonged heat exposure or thermal cycling, making it suitable for heat-resistant structures.
