Stainless Steel 409 Sheet and Plates are titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steels that provide superior oxidation resistance and formability, particularly in automotive and exhaust systems. SS 409 includes 10.5–11.7% chromium, ≤0.08% carbon, ≤1.0% manganese, and additions of titanium (at 6 times the carbon level). Ferritic type SS 409 offers tensile strength of about 380–450 MPa, yield strength 170–250 MPa, and elongation up to 25%. It provides good oxidation resistance up to 675°C. Its titanium stabilization avoids sensitization and weld decay. The alloy is magnetic in all conditions and has fair corrosion resistance in mild atmospheres. It maintains dimensional stability under heat stress and is ideally suited for use in applications where cosmetic appearance is of lesser priority to durability, thermal endurance, and fabrication efficiency.
